Anne Canaday, 1942-2015

Anne Canaday Jones Sloan passed away on July 12, 2015.

Anne was the younger of two daughters of Paul O. Canaday and Mary Anderton Canaday, who preceded her in death as did her older sister, Mary Jane Canaday Miller, all of Little Rock, Arkansas. Anne was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on June 3rd, 1942.

She grew up in Tenafly, New Jersey, until 9th grade when her father was transferred to Little Rock. Because the schools were closed that year, she lived with an aunt and uncle in Brownsville, Tennessee, and attended high school there which was a big transition. The next year she attended Hall High School in Little Rock under the watchful eyes of the National Guard.

She attended the University of Tennessee for one year and then transferred to the University of Arkansas from which she received a BS in Home Economics. She was an accomplished seamstress and an expert in garment construction, a wonderful cook and nutritionist.

She married Robert (Bob) D. Jones, Jr., in 1964 and they reared three children: Robert D. (Doug) Jones, III, Ellen Anne Jones White (Alexander), and Susan Jane Jones Wilson (Michael). Divorced from Robert in 1975, she and a business partner, operated a home renovation company (Phoenix) and a needlework finishing company (Stitches).

In 1982 she married Laurence (Larry) Talcott Sloan. They had met on an elevator in Chicago during a trade show in June, 1982, and were married six months later. In February, 1983 she moved her three children and helped rear Larry’s two sons, John Stewart Sloan (Jennifer) and Tyler Smith Sloan (Kristin). At times their home was filled with five children who were between the ages of 10 and 15 at the time of their marriage. She had many interests.

She joined the Newcomers Club in Louisville in 1983 and became president of that organization in 1985. She was a member of The Women’s Club of Louisville, The Junior League of Louisville. She was a Stephen Minister at Second Presbyterian Church of Louisville. She was a founder of a bridge club, a book club, and a stock club in Louisville. For a time she was an advocate for battered women in Louisville. She was a lifelong Presbyterian, baptized and confirmed at The Presbyterian Church at Tenafly, NJ. In Little Rock she was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church of Little Rock and in transferred her membership to the Second Presbyterian Church in Louisville in 1983. She had an abiding faith in God in spite of her many struggles with health.

Her favorite bible verse was Psalm 24:1: “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,…”

She is survived by her loving husband, her children and step children listed above. She and Larry were blessed with fourteen grandchildren and step grandchildren: Robert (Robby) D. Jones IV, Ryan Allen Jones, Adam Laurence Jones Carolyn Anne White, Lindsey Alexander White Jackson Jason Wilson, Sydney Grayson Wilson Ryan Douglas Newlun, Sylvia Lynne Sloan, Sophia Marie Sloan, Ronin Cervantes Sloan Cassidy Aspen White, Alexander William White, Zachary Gavin Sloan.

Anne, known as “Grammie”, dearly loved them all.

Funeral Service 2pm Thursday at Second Presbyterian Church, 3710 Old Brownsboro Road. Visitation 12:30 pm Thursday until time of the service at the Church
