1:00-6:00 P.M. -- VISIT DOWNTOWN. Ride the streetcars, shop at the River Market Area, and tour the Clinton Presidential Library. Be forewarned that the Clinton Library itself can be an all-day experience, and traffic in the Clinton Library and River Market area is sometimes gridlocked and parking can be at a premium. Allow yourself time to return to the Crowne Plaza in time for the Reception and Group Photo at 6:00.

STREETCARS: All of you who grew up in Little Rock rode the streetcars downtown to go shopping with your mom. The last streetcars ran Christmas day, 1949, but now the streetcars are running again and this is your chance for one more ride. Schedules, routes, and fares are on the River Rail website. Plan on about 45 minutes for the blue route, a round trip ride from the Clinton Library to North Little Rock and return. There's a second loop, the green route, that doesn't cross the river and takes only about 20 minutes.

CLINTON LIBRARY: It's impressive. Worth coming in a day early to see it. Hours and admission information on the website.

NOTE. Google wants you to turn left off of West Markham onto Mississippi, but you can also continue on to University before making the left turn, and, in fact, it's a prettier drive with less traffic to continue even further to Van Buren.

2:00–4:00 -- The Butler Center for Arkansas Studies. Sponsored by Butler Center and Mosaic Templar Center. A public program allowing those wishing to share with each other the life lessons they learned from the “Lost Year”. Coordinator, Irving Spitzberg.

LOST AND FOUND
The Impact of the Lost Year (1958-59) on Its Students’ Lives

The closing of Little Rock’s three public high schools as part of the desegregation battle of 1958-59 was a singular experience for the students who experienced this disruption in their lives. The 1958-59 high school student diaspora undoubtedly had significant impact, but we know little about it. “Lost and Found: The Impact of the Lost Year (1958-59) on Its Students’ Lives” will seek to document how this experience affected the subsequent lives of alumni/ae. This project will build on the foundation of Betsy Jacoway’s definitive history, Turn Away Thy Son, and Sandy Hubbard’s documentary film, The Lost Year.

On Saturday afternoon, July 24, 2010 from 2 – 4:00 p.m. the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies and the Mosaic Templar Center will convene some of those former students to record their subsequent life experiences through video interviews. Interested members of the Hall High School graduating class of 1960 will be the initial participants in this project. In addition, there will be a public program allowing those who are assembled to share with each other the life lessons they learned from the “Lost Year.” The interviews with Lost Year classmates will be held at the new Butler Center for Arkansas Studies on Clinton Avenue near the Central Arkansas Library.

For further information contact Irving Spitzberg at ijs@aol.com.
